Cake Decorating Ideas for Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies can be decorated with either Royal Icing or Fondant. Royal Icing becomes very hard and is crunchy when you eat the cookie whereby Fondant is chewier. Making Royal Icing cookies will take some practice. The biggest skill is to learn to have a steady hand, but it is a skill that can quickly be developed.  It is said that it can also become a very addictive hobby that might be turned into a full-blown business. These ideas are my favorite.

Headaches with Sugar Cookies; how to avoid them.

I still remember the first time when I made cookies for decorating purposes. I followed the recipe and the cookies looked fabulous until it came out of the oven. It spread and it was all touching each other! There is nothing more frustrating and disappointing if you planned your perfect cookie decorating day and the cookies look like one large malformed cookie!

I have learned 5 secrets in making cookies.

  • Use only the best baking products. Do not go for the cheaper version!
  • Always chill your dough for about 10 minutes.
  • Ensure your oven’s temperature is perfect. Buy an oven thermometer if you have to.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven, just before they are turning brown – it will still bake for a minute or so in the baking sheet pan.
  • Leave ample space between each cookie.

What is wrong with my Sugar Cookies?

Hard cookies that stick to the baking sheet.

Too much sugar

Dry and Crumbly

Too much gluten formed. Use less flour.

Very crispy

Was baked too long and is probably over baked.

Too soft

Was taken out of the oven too quickly. Remember that it needs to be slightly turning brown when you remove them
